Abstract

Objective: Femicide is increasingly recognized as a serious public health issue affecting both developed and developing countries. Accurately identifying the frequency and characteristics of femicide cases in Turkey is challenging. Consequently, studies in the literature are often limited in scope and sample size. This study aims to contribute to the literature by providing recommendations for the prevention of femicides.

Method: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, data were gathered from reports of femicides in Turkey that appeared in print and visual media between 2016 and 2020. The information was collected by searching the internet for the keywords “femicide,” “woman murder,” and “murdered.”

Results: Among the 1,279 femicide cases in Turkey over the 5-year period, the average age was found to be 32.22 years. The most common cause of death was disputes, and the most frequently used method of killing was by firearm.

Conclusion: For the prevalent femicide cases in our country, it is essential to establish multi-level intervention strategies and punishment policies aimed at addressing this social problem through multidisciplinary approaches. These approaches should target offenders who perceive women as weak or even dismiss their existence.
