Abstract
Objective: This research is to investigate the role of personality organization and criminal attitudes in paraphilic tendencies among individuals not included in clinical or forensic samples.
Methods: This study was designed as quasi-experimental and was conducted with 114 volunteer participants over the age of 18. Participants’ responses to ten different paraphilia scenarios were assessed using the Paraphilia Assessment Form, developed by the researcher. Additionally, the Sexual Sensation Seeking Scale, Inventory of Personality Organization, and the Measures of Criminal Attitudes and Associates were administered. Data were collected both in a laboratory setting and online. Data analysis included Chi-Square, Independent Samples t-Test, Mann Whitney U test, Pearson/Spearman Correlation, and Multivariate Logistic Regression Analysis.
Results: It was found that the level of Primitive Defenses significantly predicted negative emotions towards frotteurism; and a positive relationship was observed between Identity Diffusion and liking/acceptance of masochism. The level of Criminal Attitudes predicted negative emotions towards zoophilia and positive emotions towards exhibitionism, whereas Antisocial Intent was positively related to the liking and acceptance of fetishism and sadism. The level of Sexual Sensation Seeking was associated with positive emotions towards masochism and a positive correlation with liking/acceptance of paraphilias. Furthermore, having marginal sexual interest/experience and history of crime/violence correlated with evaluating paraphilias with higher scores for liking/acceptability.
Conclusion: This study determined that factors such as personality organization, criminal attitudes, marginal sexual interest/experience, victimization by violence, criminal history, and sensation seeking play a determining role in reactions to paraphilia.
